Kilgore's Kindergarten Communicator

Today begins the countdown for our last days of Kindergarten! Rubi popped the #22 balloon for us AND got to be me and lead the entire calendar time! She makes a good Mrs. Kilgore!

Today we had a fabulous, fun Friday! First, we had to take care of business and take our last TEMI test. They worked so diligently...you could hear a PIN drop! I was SO proud!

Plants DO need both water AND sunlight to grow and live! Over the past 2 weeks, we observed these three plants. Plant 1 had water and sun, plant 2 had water and no sun, and plant 3 had sun and no water. Plant 1 was green, growing and blooming while the other 2 were yellowing, crispy and sad looking!

We were very busy today working on Earth Day projects! So busy in fact that I forgot to take pictures! That's SO not like me! However, I did think to take pictures of the "work in progress" that we will complete this next week. Stay tuned...

Today, we discussed the letter Ww and it's sound. As part of the fun (and a good social skills lesson on acceptance and bullying) we read "Hooway for Wodney Wat." It's a story about a rodent who has a speech impediment (a topic close to my own heart!) and is able to outsmart a bully and become the hero of his class. We all changed our names to begin with the letter W just like Rodney! Of course, Mrs. Wilgore joined in the fun too!! Ü

This week in math, we are studying fractions...specifically halves. Yesterday, we learned about halves of circles. After the lesson, we read the book "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" and made a fraction craftivity! After we drew the chocolate chips on our cookie, we cut our cookies into two halves. Since you learn to share in kindergarten, we each took one half and traded with a friend! The craftivity was a lot of fun and the kids thanked me multiple times for planning it!

We are digging deeper into the numbers 16-20 this week and using story problems to decompose (break apart) the numbers! The Cubs are doing a great job listening and following directions to master the concept...I'm a proud teacher!

Brick's great grandpa Brown took Flat Stanley on an adventure on his farm! Not only did they send us a letter detailing the adventure, they also made a bound story book and sent every Cub a cowboy flat Stanley to color, a toy tractor, pencil, bandanna and candy!

This week we are graphing with real objects. Who better to graph with than the Cubs! We used the lines in the cafeteria to graph and compare the class by boys/girls, shirt color, lunch box/tray, and sticker color!

This week in math, we are learning how to subtract from 10. Miss Hammons came up with a bowling center game to help the Cubs practice subtraction in a fun way. They are having a "ball" with math this week!

Tuesday morning started like any other for me, until my Kinder Krew started texting back and forth about the possibility of a snow day. A SNOW DAY?! It's SNOWING outside?! Sure enough, I looked out the window and saw the beautiful white snow! Since it started so late in the morning, we had a full school day and I was SO happy!! I don't like bad weather makeup days...

Also, it's a beautiful view from my classroom window!

How do you know that heat changes things? You observe it happening of course! Last week, each student observed ice melting in different conditions.

On Thursdays, we complete a direct draw activity for the letter of the week, brainstorm a sentence and write it together. This week, we are learning the letter Tt and we drew a turtle.

When we discussed the day's schedule during calendar time, the highlight was when I put the 'iPads' schedule card into the pocket chart! They love our class iGuys, but they know that using the CES iPad cart means they get free reign of all the apps!

The weather is beautiful and friendship blooms on the playground at CES! We are all loving the cooler temperatures and sunny days!

I am out of the classroom today (but not out of CES) for a workshop and Mrs. Hammons is teaching the Cubs. They sent me this picture to tell me "Hi!"

Classroom Notes

• Snack is always a difficult subject. The kids are hungry and I want to have a snack time but please make sure to check the calendar and mark your date on your personal calendar. Snack was not provided 2 days last week and I didn't have enough "backup snack" built up to cover the snack. For instances such as this, you are more than welcome to keep an individual snack in your child's backpack just in case snack is forgotten one day in the week.

As the days go by, we are getting better and better with our daily routines, rules and procedures. We are getting our lessons in and remembering our procedures...well, mostly remembering our procedures!
Today, we got our math lesson in, our reading and ELA lesson in and even got a little center time! I have to say it was a success!

 

 

This week, part of our math lesson includes getting to learn about the math manipulatives; specifically, how we use them and what the rules for use are. Part of this time is exploration. It is very interesting to see what they come up with!
